Whatever You Say I Am, I’m Okay

“I do not reread books. I’m lazy like that, I suppose. Plus, I have a lots of books remaining on my yet-to-read shelf, so it discourages me from reading stuff I’ve already read. Thus, know that since I wanted to reread this one, it is a very, very good read.”

That excerpt from the book Whatever You Say I am, I’m Okay (WYSIAIO) by Anwar Hadi is so relatable because for the past few weeks, I have been rereading, searching and buying books I’ve already read (Catatan Matluthfi, Langit Vanilla, Harry Potter series and WYSIAIO).

Whatever You Say I Am, I’m Okay by Anwar Hadi

I borrowed WYSIAIO from my roommate during my undergraduate years. I have been loving the book ever since and I even remembered crying while reading it. I wanted to reread it again and add it to my collection but here’s come the dilemma. I wanted to buy it but I felt like it would be a waste of money since I already read it and instead of buying it, isn’t it better to spent the money on new books that I’ve not read? You feel me? But it such a good read! I still want to reread it and nothing could ever stop me! The solution? I purchased it from Carousell, a good platform to sell and buy preloved items such as books, clothes, shoes and bags.

I genuinely did not know why people would resell their books because I am that type of person that loves to collect books, the good and even the bad one. Hence, I just assumed that they hate the books, while this may be true for some, the previous owner of Langit Vanilla told me he resells his books after he has done reading them because he knows he is not going to reread them. The money received from selling his old books was then used to buy a new one. Brilliant! However, I could never. I love my collection so much but thanks to these kinds of people, I could buy books in much cheaper ways so yeay!

Back to the book. WYSIAIO is a light read and consisted of two parts, Whatever You Say I Am (non-fiction) and I’m Okay (fiction, consisted of 21 short stories). The fiction part was not as good as the former except for A friend Made, that story made me smile, and Salty Coffee (one of the characters were crying while drinking coffee. Get it? Salty Coffee. Genius).

“On our last day on Earth, what is going to shine through is not how many personal achievements we have attained but how many hearts we were able to touch.”

Page 43, Salty Coffe

Other fictions especially One Night in Ramadan didn’t really give me an impact and felt like most the stories didn’t have any messages or maybe I am just too stupid to understand so I won’t comment much about that.

Moving on. I just wanted to share some quotes that I love from the non-fiction part. I hope I could share all of them but might as well as put pictures of all the 23 non-fictions lol. I have so many favourites such as Interesting Ferry Moments, Ask Yourself, Birthday, Poetry Recital, You will be Missed and more! Full of good messages and life lessons. I do hope that I could write like him someday. It is a good book to give as gift.

“And when at times of dire despair, when all hope seems lost, when you think you’ve reached your limit, think that it’s all too much, ask yourself, “Who knows you better? Yourself? Or The One that created you? The One that knows the past to your past, knows the future to your future and has been responsible for making your existence even possible?” Know the answer to that, and you can still smile at the end of the day, ‘coz you know that you’re in good hands. The best hands. His Hands.”

Page 20, Ask Yourself

“But what does one do when one is down? What one can do– get up. Crawl, if one has to. One needs to. For themselves. For the love of God.”

Page 53, I Am Man?

“Isn’t the most deserved person to be celebrated during our birthday is the “heroine” herself? The one who struggled for 9 months and 10 days with the extra ‘luggage’ in her tummy. Yeah, her. The person who cheated death while delivering the baby. The one who suffered the bruises and cuts just to make sure that her labour of love see the light ‘at the end of the tunnel’…. So, if our next birthday comes by, …. Who is the most deserving person to receive a gift? Who should be given cake and treated to their favorite meal instead? Let’s think about it.”

Catatan Matluthfi by Matluthfi

I owned a copy of Catatan Matluthfi before but I donated it along with other books to the library after I finished with my study in USM (thanks to the expensive fees of Air Asia checked baggage). I regretted the decision quickly after, should have kept this one but everything was too late. I was already across the South China Sea.

While I was searching for WYSIAIO, one of the seller on Carousell was reselling both WYSIAIO and Catatan Mathluthfi. Hence, I purchased both of them and it only cost me RM25 including postage to Sabah/Sarawak. RM25 is usually a cost for one book. I hit jackpot! Here’s a short review; another light read, penulisan yang bersahaja, funny and inspiring.

Done. Yeap, finished and as you can see, I am really bad at writing reviews. Usually only managed to write a short one. Hence, I prefer to post it on my Insta Story instead of here. Basically, this is my attempt in trying to be more active on my blog. I am bound to go MIA again in the future but till then, let’s write and rant whatever.

p.s. Please pardon my limited vocabulary and bad grammar. I’m still learning and grammar-nazis are totally welcome here. Cheers.

Book Review: Nikina By Nadia Khan

Nikina

This review was first posted on my Instagram. It was written in mixed language, English and Malay, but mostly in Malay. A wrong platform to be honest because I never really did any book recommendation on my feed. However, I occasionally write short reviews and share books that I am currently reading on my Insta stories. Maybe If I am not lazy and not procrastinating, I could compile all of them here.

Written on April 9, 2019.

Another love story by Nadia Khan. Sama macam Kelabu and because of that kau baca sambil tak senang and tenang bontot since kene sentiasa ready untuk another crazy plot twist. Takut takut jantung kau berhenti dan otak kau berhenti pusing and pandang dinding lama macam orang hilang akal the same way macam kau baca Kelabu dulu sebab nak proses benda yang Nadia Khan tulis.
.

Sepanjang baca Nikina, kau akan buat macam macam assumptions dan jawapan semua ada dalam buku tapi kau takkan dapat unless kau habiskan baca and because of that juga aku habiskan buku ni in less than one day dan semua assumptions aku salah.
.

Dan jawapan yang aku dapat buat aku “oh..” but in a good way. Tak boleh fight Kelabu but Nadia Khan buat aku yang ada short attention span ni and akan letak tepi buku terus bila the book bore the hell of me untuk habiskan Nikina dengan jayanya tanpa memerlukan masa berbulan-bulan.
.

It’s been a while tau aku dapat buku yang buat aku baca non-stop. Contoh buku lain yang aku ingat ialah Kacau by Ariff Adly (wrote a review years ago in my blog. Blog dah bersawang dah pun).
.

Plus, Nikina ends the same way as Kelabu. Buat kau fikir sendiri tapi aku tak tau macam mana nak fikir. Aku malas fikir so aku fikir sekejap je.
.

Selingan: Hati sendiri libang libu (learn this word from the book), ada masa pula nak fikir pasal ending fictional characters kan lol
.

Talking about fictional characters, kadang-kadang aku boleh relate dengan Nik and sometimes aku boleh relate dengan Kina. Aku suka tulisan tulisan yang relateable (one of many reasons aku suka baca buku and puisi) sebab aku failed when it comes to translating my soul into words. Acah! Lack of communication skills, lack of vocabulary, low self-esteem and grammar hancur sebenarnya.
.

4/5 bintang from me.

p.s. sekarang patut tengah tulis thesis tapi aku manusia punya banyak alasan!

Thank you, Nadia Khan.

Music Album Review: Roy Kim – HOME

06. 롱디 (Hold On)
07. Curtain (feat. 정성하)
08. 멀어졌죠 (Far Away)
09. Thank You (Bonus Track)

Roy Kim was one of the contestants of Mnet’s talent competition series Superstar K4. He actually failed the audition because 2 out of 3 judges say no to him but then 1 of the judges use his ‘Superpass’ (automatically qualified). He actually won the competition and crowned as champion on Superstar K4.

He deserved it. He is so talented and his voice is so pleasant to hear to. His voice is warm and soothing like dark melted chocolate fudge caramel, like seriously. His voice especially in Far Away and Long Distance (Hold On) was just heavenly.

A handsome guy with a voice like that is just so unfair. Not to mention, he is the son of a CEO and went to Georgetown University. Mother of god.

My favorite song of his would be Now I Know because I can just relate with the lyrics. I think everyone can relate.

Why do people never know when they have it? How precious it is? –Now I Know.

You never know the value of what you have till you lose it. Don’t wait until you lose it so appreciate all the things you have in life.

When Autumn Comes is just the type of song you want to hear when you just want to laze around the house. The song was such an ear candy.

He is also a very talented singer-songwriter just like Lee Chan-hyuk from AKMU. He wrote the lyrics for Nothing Lasts Forever while studying abroad.

The song’s motive comes from the letter he got from his sister and expresses his hope for happy world and idealistic life.

Furthermore, he also wrote the lead single in the album, HOME. The lyrics is really beautiful.

This song was written in the perspective of my 14-year-old friend Sancho (his companion dog). I’ve been happy thanks to him who has waited for me at the door of my house whatever happens to me. –Roy Kim.

So yeah, I would like to recommend this album to anyone who loves listening to music before going to bed. Cheers 😀

Book Review: Kacau By Ariff Adly

kacauKacau is a horror fiction written by Ariff Adly and it was scarier than most malay horror movies such as Khurafat or Karak.

I thought it was like any typical ghost stories because its all started when they played Ouija or Spirit of The Coin and end the game before saying a proper goodbye to the soul. I mean, that’s how you get killed in books or movies by ghosts.

However, that was not actually the reason why all of them were killed one by one in such a gruesome way. It was so unpredictable and I really love the ending.

You have such a wild imagination, Mr. Ariff Adly! All 7 characters were disturbed and some were killed. It was  disgusting and disturbing.

It would be amazing if someone turn this awesome book into a movie but of course without ruining it or leaving any important details. The way the writer describes how the characters were murdered or found dead was just nauseating. It was amazing!

I finished the book in just one day. I can’t stop because it was so nerve-wreaking! What I like most about this book was how Ariff Adly writes the book using 6 or 7 different point of views. It can be a little bit confusing but made the book more spine-chilling and hair-raising because it doesn’t leave out a single details, all the scary details! 4.5/5 stars.

I hope the author writes another book for the epilogue since he introduced 5 new characters playing the same game, Ouija. I’m totally going to buy it 😀

So yeah, I have read 4 books this month. It was a huge accomplishment for me since I’m not much of a reader. I chose book genres that I don’t usually buy or read, horror and mindfuck. I also bought 2 poetry books written by the same person, Mimi Morticia. I love it! My friends can’t believe me that I read poetry, even my mom. Well, I’m shocked too. I guess I managed to encourage myself to read more, eh?

Band Review: The 1975

Band: The 1975

Members: Matty Healy, Ross MacDonald, Adam Hann and George Daniel.

Genres: Indie Rock, Indie Pop.

the1975-album-art

When I first heard of their hit song, Chocolate, I don’t really like it. So I tried to listen to their other songs such as Girls, Sex, So Far (It’s Alright) and they are actually pretty good. Their songs are really refreshing and the vocalist have this really thick accent. Maybe that’s why when I first heard of Chocolate I found it such a weird song since it was really hard to understand the vocalist’s words.

When I listen to Chocolate again, I started to like the song more and more. I find that the vocalist’s accent is freaking sexy and makes them different from other bands. Well, that’s just my opinion. I actually prefer the acoustic version of Chocolate and Sex. His voice and the thick accents are just so relaxing and just the type of music you want to listen to when it is raining or days when you want to just sit back and relax.

However, some people, of course, hate them. They found it really weird because he sing in an accent and some even thought that he was not singing in English. Haha. Some said that all their songs sound the same. Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But still, I don’t think people should bash or leave mean comments saying that their music or other music sucks or gay.

Furthermore, they also make a cover of One Direction’s song What Makes You Beautiful. I prefer their cover than the original. It was a slow song and really different from the original. Such an eargasm. And of course there are people who thinks that they are making the song sound depressing. Lol.

I know that saying a band that they are different does’t make them any different or unique from other bands such as The Neighborhood or Haim but just try listening to their whole album and you’ll know what I mean. I just love their music style. Cheers 😀

Anime Review: Barakamon + SUPER BEAVER

Barakamon

Aired: July 2014.

Episodes: 12

Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life.

Plot:

Barakamon or “high spirited person” is about Seishu Handa who is a calligrapher. He was send to an island for a retreat by his father after he punched the curator who said his work was unoriginal. There, he met a lot of  fun villagers, interact with them and begins to learn.

My thoughts:

I don’t really like the anime when I watched the first 2 episodes. I found it really boring and plain but I still watched them anyway because I thought Naru, the little girl was really adorable. Then, the third episode came out and I finally understand what the anime trying to show. Every episodes there would be different advice and lesson learned by Handa. All thanks to the villagers, Naru and her friends. If you’re a fan of light-hearted anime then Barakamon should be on your watch lists! Furthermore, the villagers speak with a dialect. I find it refreshing since they sound really different and cute, especially Naru and her broken Japanese. The anime is really entertaining and I just love the characters since all of them are so silly in their own way. Lol.

And when I watched this anime I discover a new awesome band, SUPER BEAVER. They sing the opening soundtrack of Barakamon called Rashisha. I love the lead singer’s voice and the song was really meaningful too. Then, I tried to listen to their different songs, such as ありがとう and 歓びの明日に and I really love it! Too bad I can’t find any English subtitles but still, I’m a fan 😀

Anime Review: Gekkan Shouja Nozaki -Kun 1st Episode

Episode 1: This Love… Is Being Turned into a Shoujo* Manga. [Click to watch]

Gekkan Shouja Nozaki-KunAired: July 2014.

Episode: 1 – ongoing.

Genre: Romantic comedy, Parody.

Plot:

Chiyo Sakura is a high school student who determine to confess her love to Umetaro Nozaki, a Shoujo* manga artist. However, Nozaki thought Sakura was his fan so he gave her an autograph instead. When Sakura discovers that Nozaki is a manga artist she agrees to be his assistant so she can be with him and get closer to him.

My thought:

Hilarious! I don’t laugh easily but when watching this anime I was already laughing my ass off on the first 2 minutes. The first episode was so entertaining and full of great punchline. The OST are really catchy and lively. The whole 24 minutes of this anime was just so enjoyable and laughable. This anime reminds me of my 1st crush and I actually understand how Sakura felt when she tried to confess her love but failed miserably not once but twice! It does brings back memories. I also love how the male lead, Nozaki always have this blank expression on his face and he’s just so clueless. I’m excited to watch the second episode when it’s aired. I’m going to continue watching and I think this anime could be one of my favorite anime. I would recommend this anime to anyone who like romantic comedy. If you already watch or read the manga, what do you think? Do you like it? Hate it? 😀

It’s already July and the album was released 3 months ago. But oh well, their songs are still good. It’s been a while since I listen to a whole album. I usually just listen to one or two songs in music albums. But for AKMU, it’s really different because one of the members, Lee Chan-hyuk wrote, composed and produced all 11 tracks. And he is only 18 years old. Not to mention his little sister, Lee Soo-hyun who is only 15 have such an amazing voice. And yes, Akdong Musicians consists of 2 talented siblings. The entire album is so refreshing and funny too.

“The debut album of AKMU, Play (Akdong Musician album) has more 3,326,063 downloads. This album debuted on number two in Billboard’s U.S. World Albums Chart.”

Each one of their songs are really unique and Lee Chan-hyuk is such a great lyricist. The songs have a really deep meaning especially Artificial Grass & On the Subway. Their songs are really cute, refreshing, soothing and just relaxing. Just the type of songs that we can relate to. My favorite would be Little Star.
